Hi, I’m Lauren. I’ve recently returned to the U.S. after a long time away, mostly in Bulgaria and Bangladesh, and have been making my home in Foodie Central in the U.S. – Portland, Oregon – since September. I’m a roving cook who likes, and likes to write about, mostly-vegetarian, mostly-unpretentious, and mostly-unfussy food. I’m slowly filling this blog with stories about my life and my kitchen and I hope you’ll like reading it. Leave comments, tell your friends, support root vegetables.

Your mama emailed a bunch of people telling them about this so I thought I would check it out! I am glad you will be home in July though I know you will miss Bulgaria (or maybe not). Let me know when you get to Asheville and I will come and visit. I miss the mountains. There is no one for me to stay with anymore since both my grandmothers are not there. I love you!
Lauren, e-mail me. I’m home and don’t have your current e-mail address here. I want to give you some news. Love, Carole
Just wanted to let you know that I am going to mention your blog on my brand new one. You have a lot of great recipes!
Hi Lauren,
I’m an Australian of Bulgarian descent and had the pleasure of visiting the homeland of my Baba earlier this year. Unfortunately it was a fleeting visit which covered Sofia & Ruse, and numbered a mere 5 days.
I would be interested to know if you came across any authentic (vegetarian if possible) Bulgarian dishes that impressed you that you could share?
Thanks & regards,
Louise
ps – I love parsnips too, and as an aside found your site via FX Cuisine – have you tried the Sicilian Drowned Broccoli recipe on that site? It’s heaven!
Hi Lauren,
Just came across your site via your comment on Dinner with Julie. I’m enjoying your writing style and great photos and the recipes. I was wondering if you have a way to view the recipes by list. I would like to search by it. Just a thought.
Thanks!
Kate
Lauren,
My mom came across this site when she was “googling” my name. I was excited to see what you’ve done with my basic pancake recipe by adding rosebuds and petals to it! I’m enjoying browsing your blog and will be trying some of your recipes!
When did you return to the U.S. and how was your PC experience? Any plans to return to Bulgaria? (I’m working on going there next summer)
Stephanie
